Resplendence, a blog from Radiant Resolution about graphic design

Full Circle

I was on my way to work one morning when a flash of orange caught my eye in a nearby sign. It reminded me of a design I first did as a new designer. As I got closer, I realized it was my design!

It's such a honor and a true success for a designer to see their work years (or in this case over a decade) after its completion, still being utilized for its potential. Whenever I see a design of mine in public, it immediately brings me back to that time in my life when it was designed, and this one was no exception.

I met Geraldine Valentino-Smith when I was teaching her daughter to ride horses at our farm. I was about to graduate with my bachelors in graphic design, and Geraldine was about to run for the Bowie City Council At-Large. She asked for my help with promotional material, and I was ecstatic....my first official design job under my brand new freelance business (at the time, called BLM Designs).

Geraldine suggested using a color for her designs that wasn't typical for the political signs we normally see. No red, white, and blue. We decided on orange, which would definitely stand out from the rest (and obviously still catches the eye of drivers-by!)

The result? Flashy, with an emphasis on "Geraldine," because her last name, Valentino-Smith would be a tough one to focus on. Focusing on "Geraldine" also shows this is a woman running for office, without the feminine purples and pinks we sometimes see for women candidates. A strong, bold, woman candidate. It's amazing what a few simple tricks can do to sway the mind to a conclusion about a person they may not even know!

While I haven't seen Geraldine in years, it's nice to see my work is still valued and appreciated, even though I was a young inexperienced designer. She gave me a chance, helped me to build my portfolio, and for that alone I am grateful. I'm glad I was able to assist her in several successful terms in office, and I'm grateful for every design I see while I'm out driving, because I know was able to help that person or business even in just a small way.
