Remember, people visit your blog for your content, not the design. So the design must enhance the content and not take away from it. Here are some tips to help make your content shine while maintaining a beautiful, memorable blog people will visit over and over.
Fonts: 4's a crowd.
Usually, designers say 3 is a crowd for most design purposes. But for a blog, you'll need alternative fonts to display the date, author, title, body, and links. Try to stay within the same font family, so everything flows together and readers are distracted from your content.
Use a color scheme with minimal colors.
No white text on dark backgrounds here! Make your blog easy to read with a light background and dark text. It's too difficult for readers to decipher light text on dark background. Also, it's good to save your brightest color for your "call to action." This could be a button for subscribing your blog, contact information, or a way of engaging or starting a conversation.
A Picture is worth 1,000 words.
Using imagery in your blog helps break apart the text, attract more interest, and helps immediately identify your separate blog posts. You can find lots of free stock photography online, like Pixabay, or use your own images of project samples or sketches.
Drop shadows are OK, but use global lighting.
Global lighting means that shadows will appear on the same side in every instance. Using a drop shadow on a button works well, unless that shadow points another direction from the shadow on your header. If you are using the Creative Cloud Suite, check the "use global lighting" button.
More white space please!
Don't feel the need to fill every space with more article suggestions or social media shares. Having a little breathing room for your eyes helps readers skim across your page better.
Go with Grids.
Grids allow you to design your page by fitting everything into a designated space. Readers love grids, though they may not know it. Having everything aligned perfectly gives a more professional appearance.

Your blog should be easily shareable, with social media "share" links at the bottom of each post. Then don't forget to share yourself to your social media pages and subscriber lists!
